I see. I wasn't aware of that. I used to use tinypic, but they tend to delete images after a while. Would PRTSCR.net work?

Blue Plug Electronics / Vocaloid Appreciation/Discussion
« on: June 20, 2016, 12:56:01 am »
Because I have too much free time on my hands and little else to do but to type about something since my drawing muse has been a little dry lately.

Some people love them, some people hate them, but overall, the value and technical abilities of Vocaloid programs and their producers are something to be recognized. Now, in the early days, they were quite buggy, as to be expected with taking a whole new direction with technology, but with Vocaloid 4 engine up and running at wonderful capacity, it's stunning to see (and hear) how far they've come, especially with English language Vocaloids.

I feel like too many people get caught up on Miku, and while she's excellent and versatile, she does not represent the full potential of everything these programs have to offer. No one of them can alone, really. That's just the thing though: each voice, or program, if you will, has its own strengths and weaknesses for music producers, and the variety of choices they have now (and many more to come with little notion of slowing down as far as my eyes can see) is simply mind-blowing.

That aside, it's more than just Vocaloids, it's the producers that use them and the people who work on all the relevant PVs and the artwork of the community. One producer may make a lighthearted song about love, and another may make a deeper song about depression. Rather than trying to work with a music company to professionally produce as a songwriter, these programs make a huge market for original content and indie musicians, and the fanbase looking for these synthetic voices makes a great catch for a producer to get noticed. In fact, recently one of the major production companies for Vocaloid products released a series of magazines with a version of the software and tons of tips for how to use them and make original content.

I think a lot of people are put off by the fact that some of them don't sound "human enough", which I personally think is quite a silly argument to make against them. I understand where these people come from, and I also see how it plays a roll in some people not liking to listen to music with synthetic vocals. That's perfectly fine and understandable. Some people simply just don't like it. However, a lot of the time it depends on who is using the program and what sound they're trying to get out of it. I have heard many Vocaloid original songs and covers that sound very realistic and lifelike, especially as the technology behind making them continues to progress (and I am still a huge fan of the new GRWL feature in the V4 engine), but of course I have also heard some users take the same Vocaloid(s) and make a song sound completely inhuman and capitalized on the digital synthetic sound.

To like them or to love them or to simply dislike them or hate them is a matter of subjectiveness and a fair spot for all opinions, as everyone is entitled to their own. My overall point here (which may have gotten lost in my rambling) is that regardless of what you think of the music (or Talkloids, which are a thing, although that may not be exactly what they're called), a certain amount of respect is owed to the companies and programs for what they bring to the creative world. It's essentially like "You don't have to like the finished product, but the capability of the tool which made it deserves credit."

So, what about you all? What are your opinions regarding Vocaloids? Any personal favorite songs/producers/companies/'loids? Any you can't stand?

Did she just bit the lips?

Yes. The character is a vampire. She tends to give her partner some trouble because of it. I think biting the lips shows another layer of need as far as vampirism is concerned. Normally it's seen in a more "sexual" context of kissing, so I guess I was having fun playing around with subverting that idea.

I tend to use imgur to share my work. Is there a better image sharing site that cooperates with this forum?

I did say that I came here mostly for art, especially since my art thread in the other forum I'm in hardly receives much attention. I put the 18+ warning due to the fact that sometimes I will draw characters making obscene gestures, using foul language, having some violent scene, or doing the dirty. I seek to represent human things in a somewhat idealized form.

I'll cut my rambling here and share my first piece under the cut, although it's already been posted in that other forum. Just a forewarning, at this point in time, I do not have a workable scanner, so this was taken with a cell phone camera, therefore the quality and colors are not exactly true or pretty.

Now, there are many things that I already see that should have been adjusted, such as the jut of the blonde in the corset's wrist, shoulder and somewhat mooshed face. The other one looks a little too thin to my eyes as well. Some of the shading work probably could have used more layering to smooth out the roughness, too, however, my colored pencils are running a little low. I also see some lazy inking and a couple of inking mishaps, especially on the corset.

If anyone else sees something that can be improved upon, feel free to let me know. This isn't a piece that I'm absolutely proud of, but perhaps it's better to start rough so that I can make mistakes that I can learn from.

Although tbh, some people are better at it than I am. Luckily, they are here.
We're all here to improve on something. I hope in time you, too, get yourself to a level you are happy with in regards to reviewing.

Also, I forgot to make mention of what alternate name I can go by, since my username is a bit of a mouthful. It might be easiest to shorten it to Hema, although I'll likely reply to anything.

I suppose instead of answering this as a mangaka, I'll answer as an artist.

I want my audience to feel something, or to experience a story that I tell. To me, art is simply an extension of the human method of communication. Some themes that come up a lot in my art are passion and individuality. Sometimes I'll create a work based on a theme and personify it, since I mostly draw people instead of places or things. I choose people because subtle things like body language and facial expression can convey a clear meaning instantly when done correctly.

As for why...I suppose you could say that when I was younger, I wasn't quite as articulate, and many children my age misunderstood me. Often times, they would be deaf to any of my suggestions. Now that I have found a way to be heard, I suppose that's the how and why in and of itself, really. Perhaps it's loneliness, or perhaps it's the utmost sympathy that causes me to reach out and share my experiences, my thoughts, and my feelings in this way.

I love what you do with colored pencil! It plays really well with the light. It's interesting to me how you use the white of your paper to help bring some of that light out.

My only advice would be to perhaps try increasing the contrast by starting lightly with a contrasting color and then building your darks over that. For example, if you want to draw something red, start with lightly using green in the darkest areas, and then a dark red over it. It will create a darker shadow as well as contrast by bringing out the natural depth of red through brown.

Art / Re: Hate hands? I do too. NOW LET'S DRAW THEM EVERYDAY!!!
« on: June 18, 2016, 06:39:19 am »
I used to hate drawing hands, but after a while, I figure I've gotten decent at drawing them in static poses. It's when I try to bring in perspective or some dynamic level with them that things get complicated. It's strange, though, because your hands are the things you look at most on your body all day, usually.

This post still inspired me to keep trying to get better with them, so I went ahead and grabbed a pen and sketched some things out. (Does it break rules if I used some guidelines with them? Lovely little tools, guidelines...)

I also apologize for image size. I took a picture with my phone because my scanner is currently having issues.

Spoiler (hover to show)

Day two: I decided to work some on fists. Clearly I'm going to have to spend a little more time with them. Something about the connective tissue between the thumb and index finger seems to be giving me the most trouble. At the very least, resized this one to not have as much trouble as day one.

Day three: once again, I worked with fists. This time, I looked up some references to help with the issue I noticed I was having with in the area between thumb and index finger, and in my last sketch today, I mentally mirrored one of the other references to force my mind to really see how it worked rather than simply copying what the eye sees. I find this to be a useful trick for learning new ways of drawing.

Tips and Tutorials / Re: Why traditional is still relevant
« on: June 18, 2016, 06:17:02 am »
I personally feel more connected with my art when I do it with paper and pencil. I have tried digital art, and there are many pros to it, but with paper and pencil, I can focus better because I know that my pencil is going to do what it's going to do when I move my wrist one way or another depending on how I hold it. To me, it's like the difference between typing and handwriting. Typing has a lot of benefits, but it doesn't feel the same.

Then again, that may just be because of the fact that I was raised with paper and pencil and was that kid who loved coloring books (and am an adult that still loves them).

I can't remember which artist my art professor was quoting, or if she was quoting anybody, but it went something like "A painter who cannot first draw is a farce." I'm probably horribly misquoting that, but learning to use a tool and draw with it is a fundamental technique that all visual artists generally work to master. Transferring that into digital art, however, is another thing entirely than just starting in it. I think my drafting teacher in high school said something similar about why he wanted us to learn to use our scales and drafting desks with paper and pencils before using a CADD program.

Besides that, digital media doesn't help you learn how water will affect your watercolor, nor will it give you the frustrations of how much pressure you put on a marker. Because of that, and the different looks of other media, traditional art will still live for a very long time.

I'm already a part of one development forum, but I decided, eh, why not join another to hear as many sides to critique as possible? I'll mainly be here for sharing and improving my art. I'll also be more than happy to share my art tricks with you all if you feel that they will help you!

I mostly prefer traditional art, with pen and ink, colored pencil, and marker as my favorite media. As for my overall style, I'd call it a blend of manga and American comic book inspired.

Outside of art, I fancy myself an interesting person, sort of. I attend a local university for a major that suits my career, and I see art as my hobby. I am a fan of many things, from psychological anime to world history and the concept of vampirism.

I look forward to getting up a good an artwork that I feel comfortable with to share with you all soon. (Bows.)
