While you could have him walking through life grabbing the mask of the person closest to himself and putting it on leaving both of them wearing the same mask this would represent the MC being a sociopath or a psychopath (depending on created or born that way). While this would show how he moves through life blending but not belonging the writer has to understand that his MC is a sociopath (not that there is anything wrong with that) and that this is still played out.
You could have the MC going through the world placing masks on people as commentary about the currently levels of politics-media-"human" functionality/autonomy but I'm not sure where you go from there without reaching into the plagiarism/cliche' bag. You could shonen it up and have them fight/struggle with other characters for control of the emotional mob but you are in dark territory that most people do not like if you go there. On the upside, writing in the uncomfortable zone leads to less chance of just recycling other people's stuff and less chance of getting noticed when you do. 4

My Amazon search shows a FLCL manga? Was that done after the original series? 5
Mini-Tokyo / Re: What's your favorite anime/manga moment« on: October 06, 2018, 06:15:49 pm »Attack on Titan season 2 won the Nobel prize for "Full Retard" last year, for the episode where they explain that the titans retain the human's mass when they expand. Yep, once you math it out the largest titan has a density that is less per cubic meter than hydrogen. When they transform they should rocket into the sky never to be seen again. Remember kids, there are times in writing you should leave stuff in the black box and not try to explain it.Well I watched She: The Ultimate Weapon (or something like that). Other nominees were Netflix's new Godzilla abomination where they explain that they traveled at close to light speed to a planet 10 light years away and when that place sucked they immediately came back to earth at near light speed. Because of the light speed travel 20,000 years had passed on Earth when they got back.. Yeah, I watched it with subs to make sure that was not a bad translation. Ahrg and the plasmasomethingness tech. Remember kids, stay in school. I'm reading Battle Angel Alita Mars Chronicles at least it has story right now, Last Order Dragon Balled really bad. Kishiro's best days are a spec in his rear view mirror. Is he now doing this digitally? Blech! It seems soulless compared to his original stuff but he is producing now and at a great rate. 6
General MM Discussion / Re: When does a fanfic surpass the story it's based off?« on: October 06, 2018, 06:01:13 pm »Never. This guy is totally wrong and I can prove it. When you go to the movies this summer an awful lot of the offerings you will have to choose between are FANFIC. Did you love the latest Avengers movie but didn't care for teh comics? Well then the fanfic is better than the original. We like to stereotype fanfic as "I'm writing this furry anal-vore Star Trek story with me as the Marty Stu main character, it is going to be awesome!" but fanfic is really just one person taking another person's characters and/or universe and deciding to set their story with it. While some reboots like The Thing are so unrecognizable when compared to the original, most reboots are not just recycled plagiarism they are also fanfic. Game of Thrones is now Game of Fanfic, sure it has suffered for it but we still get more episodes even if we now have to spend a lot of time yelling at the TV and facepalming. Does Joss Whedon want to be called a fanfic writer while he rolls around in his billions? I doubt he cares.. because BILLIONS. So in conclusion: not only can fanfic surpass the source material it can lead to a high paying job that makes you famous. 7
Mini-Tokyo / Re: What's your favorite anime/manga moment« on: September 29, 2018, 05:10:50 pm »Well I watched She: The Ultimate Weapon (or something like that).Well , it's wasn't called favorite anime/manga moments for nothing . Otherwise , my choice would've be different if it were more generalized favors (Chrono Crusade is just above average overall , in my opinion . But it has it's moments and those moments do hit my weak spot for bittersweet moments)I guess I can drag that one off the shelf again. I remember it as very generic and may not have made it to the end of the box. My god was it terrible. Unforgivably terrible as someone from Japan has a unique perspective on what is like to have a super weapon used on you so to be so completely wrong is horrific. If one side has a super weapon that can be used endlessly you do not have long wars of attrition. If it can wipe cities off the planet and erase whole armies your war is done by tea time. 8
Manga Gallery / Re: Broken« on: September 29, 2018, 04:54:25 pm »The problem with the "everyone wears a mask" shtick is that people want to blend so their masks are generic. The art I like. Of course the giant failing with this is the fact his "other human" was clearly wearing a mask as that allowed them to behave like all the other mask wearers. So the MC was not seeing anything true, and they never found another human before they put on the mask. This is a problem with recycling other people's content, you have to understand it to do it properly. When you are just stealing bits, often they do not work when you do not understand them. I would like to see the art paired with a story of its quality. The art is already a step above what all the "want to be" manga artists cap out at. I suspect the artist is younger which suggests they have a great future and may go pro. 9
Coffee House / Re: Is free really free?« on: August 25, 2018, 01:53:06 am »
Of course there is free stuff. A friend stopped into town after I hadn't seen him for years. I gave him a set of New Rocks, a hat that another friend said he'd shoot off my head if he ever saw me wearing it again, and a lighter he could burn himself with (It is plasma). I expected nothing in return and may never see him again.
And there there is the bad person option. If you steal it it is free. If you never get caught there is never a price, it was free (I'm not going to go into social impacts of outlier behavior as OP sounds like they mean it on an individual level). 10

The art I like.
The story I have seen so many times. As for the masks. Where do you go with it that hasn't already been done? For masks we've had universal faces, big fake smiles, no faces, smooth faces, glitched faces, morphing faces, etc. (demons faces would be a slightly different piece or slightly different flavor to this one) you could have the masks quickly swapping between the people as they try to act like other people to be accepted. Looking at the lack of options for something new I say stylize the masks heavily in your style. 11

I remember it as very generic and may not have made it to the end of the box. What I should do this weekend is dig through the piles and find whatever it was that I bought because someone said that it was by far the most depressing anime ever. I suspect it will end in the predictable cliche that you figure out by ep 1 or 2. It is some anime that will probably be a romance between a boy and a girl who is a super weapon who will most likely die at the end. 12
Mini-Tokyo / Re: FLCL Progressive doesn't understand FLCL (classic).« on: August 25, 2018, 01:16:17 am »The depressing part is that many people defend FLCL Progressive due to thinking the original is overrated.I assume these people are young SAO/Naruto fans who are pretty new to anime? Or just contrarians who hate the best stuff because that makes them cooler? "Idiot, Fire wasn't man's most important invention, the button down tweed blazer was man's most important invention by far, now go back to your plebeian life, the adults are talking!" As things go it is the ONLY feature worthy of really deep examination by high level film students (you know the kind*). It is the best coming of age piece I have seen. Spotting the Christ figure is well just a little too easy. The Vespa represents time (hence it is often doing what time does). Haruko represents hormones. The blue Rickenbacker represents puberty, etc. But the way they put it together and make it work.. immaculate. *if you do not they are the kind who have been taught to pull everything apart into symbolism and draw new stories, meanings, and statements from things. Apocalypse Now starts with Martin Sheen laying on the bed but the shot is upside down. This is because Martin Sheen is the Hanged Man. As you all knowing in tarot the The Hanged man represents life in suspension. 13
Tips and Tutorials / Re: How to create a good legend/prophecy« on: January 23, 2018, 09:33:52 pm »
OK lets make it easier. Your average consumer is a moron. They feel about things they do not think about things. So lets simplify.
Women's evolutionary power base is sex. It is great and amazing and got us from small group scavengers to the moon. Men's evolutionary power base is violence. It kept wolves, bears, and other men out of our caves while the women figured things out. Now as anime primarily markets to young males you have to look at the evolutionary power base and ask "Why do women not out number men 20+:1 if men's power base leads them to kill each other?" Well for that we have to look at adaptations. Violent men were valuable even when women judged them unacceptable for passing on genes. The way our species dealt with this is "hero worship" (and the unfortunate r4pe during wars/battles/raids). Males can avoid violence by living vicariously through the victories of their heroes. You can look at citations for the affects of sports team win/loss on male T levels or you can simply look at male human animal years with "my dad can beat up your dad"; it is wired in. So to cater to this makes legend/prophesy creation easy. Just cater to the wiring. Oh Jesus, I though we cleaned up the censoring years ago. we are writers not children. 14
The Tavern / Re: Favorite Song?« on: January 20, 2018, 01:38:34 am »
Well you asked.. I hope you learn not to do that any more.
Favorite song.. My, how elementary school. Is this like favorite color or best friend? For "been there, done that" Massive gym workouts: Ministry. Just one fix.. then other high energy rage based ****. Planting dead friends? Ray Charles "I can't stop loving you. "Amazing grace" on bags for the cops (this is for the only cop I know, who has not tortured me for fun) , after that is just their favs. Not angry or depressed? Offspring, Greenday, King of the road (song), Electric6 (gay bar). Each time I walk to my death*? It varies between melancholy and mania. In the end it doesn't matter as it just has to stop or get off its ass and kill me. Meh, you know how it goes. *Going to my death. Ray Charles " I can't stop loving you" Allowed me to cry and accept what was going to happen. It was a moment of grace in my life... I lived. again. I do not know what is going on at this point. Ministry "Just one fix". Already angry, hadn't hit the gym in days, and then found a rapist I was hunting. **** his .38! it was party time. Planning your own suicide, Pink Floyd and then a bridge jump. The fact you swam below to scout means you were never serious. The fact 10+ of your friends followed you.. a "Guy with a .357 is here and going to kill everyone!", Meh more Ministry. Should have killed him but didn't. So I carry the life of the nobody he killed the next night. For the rest of time I have to carry this. Walking into the middle of knife fights.. meh, we are all friends here and it hasn't killed me yet. (personal best.. 21 stitches) 15

Although, truthfully in Manga it's a very very fine line. All you want is a good story with solid bone structure. Could be a book, manga, anime, movie, etc What you create is just supposed to be good. There are no excuses for plagiarism. You want to go homage? Rough territory. Good luck if you make it work. |
