A huge shout out to those who didn't make it a bug deal. If it is a problem, you can always let me know ahead of time.
It's best not to act like a mod because if you do see a problem and the only thing you can do is let them know, then a whole fight could break out when a real mod can fix it.

Orchid had the stones to mention it. (the last stone is like 600 lbs right?) The rest of us were passively polite. We were cowards, Orchid was not.
Now if someone wants to open a char dev thread on how this all happened.. Sexy.
Every writer needs a deep deep understanding of social engineering.

I think all that needed to be said has been said. We should drop it and move on.

Like I said it was mostly based on what I saw in other forums. I did extra research on what colors to avoid too. Red itself was one of the colors that invokes anxiety.
But this Guideline still is to help others in the future as I'm more worried about colors that can't be read on black background.

I made the guideline just in case people were becoming bothered by it. I didnt know it would spark a bigger conversation.
Everyone still has the freedom to use whatever color they like. But I'm trying to make sure everyone doesn't get bothered. I really made it as a precaution as I saw other forums go crazy with the colors and some impossible to read.
I wholly agree to your decision on this and sorry for the whole debate on this that got a little too heated .

If my colors are too much, let me know. I really enjoy colors but on my posts. Just on making my story stand out more.

I always remind myself of the rules of individuality , for this case 'What may work for you may not for the others' . That's why I get why standards exists , so that it works for the majority and minimizing the negativeness to the ones that don't and for this case , I can easily fall in that minority .
I'm once guilty of doing such act a long time ago - painting my whole text a bright cyan and stylizing my fonts with either Monotype Corsiva or a custom-made Gothic style font (from what I recall , it's very stylized that it can be unreadable to a lot) , almost to a point of addiction . As I grew older and revisited the old posts , I find it a pain to my eyes and even a staff told me to not use it excessively due to multiple reasons or I might get banned (Don't know why they kept quiet during most of that time though) . I used to get mad at it at first but as I grew older , I can see why now and my ever deteriorating eyesight caused by looking at my own posts (and they're almost always scrollie long) supports the reasons . Being considerate and moderate at that moment till now , I no longer do stuffs that only satisfies my personal taste only .

Ah, I was making a joke about myself and how I used to type in all red here. I think it shows up fine, so I never thought it was an issue, but since someone pointed out that the contrast doesn't work well, I've cut it out. I hadn't realized that it was an issue, and I am the precedent for this thread to exist. I do still love the color red, but I've stuck it as a line or two in my signature rather than a whole post as something of a compromise. I don't want to hurt people's eyes.
I'm glad that you're pointing this out, though, so now if a new member comes along, they can learn from my mistake and be a little more sensitive to others.

Yeah ... before it was Tea Green , it was firstly Yellow , then it was Lime Green . Tea Green is at a borderline (Which what I was looking for) ...
One reason - Occupation , doctors confirms this a long time ago (it's almost allergy-like) . The short-sight issue is a whole different cause though , but it means I'm on glasses 24/7 which could contribute to this problem ...
Imagine having a job where you're forced to sit in front of a monitor(s) for the majority of the 8 hours , 6 days of work . I also have been illustrating works (as a part-time , at night mainly) mostly on digital (used to be 100% traditional , but digital cuts my work time a lot) for the past 10 years and that at certain time during those years , especially when dealing with commissions , I may spend up to 10 hours in front of the monitor , non-stop .
I can read colored text just fine , so as long as it's as direct , brief & short enough that I don't have to spend a good amount of time having to read it as though you're decoding it , like thread titles , reminders , announcements , key points , classification , etc. . Take for example this site . the links are very easing to my eyes , so are the headers (they're not much of it) . The white text aren't overpowering thanks to the font type , though I personally would love for it to be a tad bit less white (Ignore my personal taste on this) . But if it were to turn bright Yellow or dark Dark Brown , then I'm out because the last , bad thing I want to suffer from is the inability to read handwritten documents ...
Also , for those who wanted to use all sorts of colors (http://www.computerhope.com/htmcolor.htm) , and :
I like my stories to have color on them so I always mix in color. But it's to give my story a certain vibe.
There are ways to give 'color' to the story without having to resort to applying colors to it's text as it may come off as 'unnatural' .
EDIT : You can make use of colored fonts for your personal use for your story , but when it comes to showcasing it to the public , stick with black & white . Too many different color can create confusion to the readers and this applies to art in general ...

I'd also recommend probably seeing an eye doctor. I saw the rainbow color. But the green looked perfectly safe.

Your eyes swelled up after reading a bit of bright color? I'd see a doctor for that. That doesn't sound healthy.

It's wee late here , but I'm not working today , I mind as well post a bit more .
As of currently , my eyes now had swollen real good and it hurts badly after proofreading it (it didn't take long for it to affect me) , which is why minimize the use of colors on my end , even if I wanted to use it (I so wanted to turn my text into rainbow color) . Didn't say I didn't tell and I forgot to mention that short-term wise , it's negligible . But long-term wise , it's never good and as a reviewer and a critic myself , it's too much to bear to read a wall of colored text that I can't give a critique at all , let alone responding back (Apologies to whom I didn't respond back) .
I won't even bother pushing my argument over the uses of colored text anymore and let whoever who wants to use them to their content in any site . Not that I am spiteful over such thing , it's just that I just need to voice this out to those who does use it excessively and that I avoid even reading one that are long enough (like what I've posted in the spoiler) like a plague and never respond to it at all ...
And since my eye hurts , I had to drop finishing one-shots for the night (I can still read what I've written , but it's pretty agonizing) & just go straight to sleep after this post :| .

The green works very good with black background. Soft colors like those I think would work. If I could change the color settings I would but I don't know how, so that's why I made this lame guideline. :-\
I admit. I really really like the rainbow! When I tried reading it though, I can see how it can get old really fast.

Neither one of those bothers my eyes, personally, and I think the bright neon greenish one actually looks quite nice.

http://www.writer2001.com/colwebcontrast.htm http://www.webdesignerdepot.com/2009/08/the-dos-and-donts-of-dark-web-design/ (note the lack of color usage & variety on their examples ?)
Eventhough the second link is more for web designers in general , I feel that it's kind of related to what is in question here .
I'm going to ask those who loves to use all sorts of colors to hover on this spoiler , just to give you a better picture of when I said "use it sparingly" and "when it calls for it" ...
Warning : Eye hazard incoming !
Let's give it another one : Source : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color
Even a pair of healthy eyes will end up wearing glasses/contacts eventually , like me (and I hate it) after reading texts like this , especially texts that are long & had been bolded and/or enlarged .
EDIT : I love rainbows . So don't make me type out everything in it ...

I mostly use color to differentiate my posts from others when I'm quick scrolling to be honest. I chose red here because on my screen it looked nice, but I recognize that on others it might have looked terrible, so I stopped when asked and decided to just keep the dash of red in my signature to do so.
I don't see any problem with color or typefont, and I personally feel that serif fonts are just easier to read, but I may be a minority there (or a romanticist). Now, as for size, as long as it isn't like, over size sixteen or eighteen I'm generally fine, because I have terrible eyesight and size twelve or fourteen helps me read them, depending on the font. On a lot of sites like this, I use the browser's zoom and set it at about 115% anyway. Using size eighteen for a header, however, while a bit of a stretch, and depending on the surrounding font sizes, might be acceptable. Exceptions would be a huge statement like "Happy Birthday" or "Thank you."
Again, I don't really have anything against different colors or typefonts, and I see them as an additional expression of the poster. If something like how someone chooses to type (so long as they aren't flooding a huge space by the font size and the contrast is fairly legible) gets under your skin so badly, I don't know what to tell you.

"Just ... stick with the default white text on dark/black background and vise versa for regular posts , please ?
Not that I discouraged the use of colored fonts or the size and type for that matter , but there's a right time for it to be used ... and used sparingly .
No.....sounds like you're not discouraging it at all..... ::)

This is what goes on in my own head whenever I see someone posting every single posts in full-on rainbow eyegasmic spectacle on a typical , regular forum(s) ... :
"Just ... stick with the default white text on dark/black background and vise versa for regular posts , please ? Why the need to color-fied every single posts you've ever made , down to the very LETTER !?"
I know you (Whoever is guilty of this) want to project some sort of personality to the readers about you , the post or whatever but PLEASE , just don't do that in colors ... it makes you look(sound) like a hippie on drugs , okay ? Your posts are meant to be read , not to be mesmerized visually . Same goes for the font size and type as well ...
Not that I discouraged the use of colored fonts or the size and type for that matter , but there's a right time for it to be used ... and used sparingly .
God , must I tell these posters that I'm using glasses while reading 'it' ?

I play with colors all the time. I use paint and use the color that shows there to get the hex code.
Those sites look very useful, they could make colors more useful. I'm very familiar with Wikipedias web color article though.

Fair points. I believe, if anyone is curious, two colors that work are deepskyblue and magenta, both of which look pretty okay in this site tbh...
Title: Font color guideline (?)
Post by: Orchid on August 03, 2016, 01:49:10 am
Hello again, Mavericks. I wanted to look into font colors and making sure everyone has a good time. I don't want anyone to feel like they don't have any options when using colors for their posts.
From my own experience on the forum, and simply because I don't want to be too flashy, I have been using the standard color with some default colors for headers and bulletins. I know some forums like to have their Admin and Mods use color text to make them stand out but I don't want to take away the freedom and choice members have.
So this is just a rough recommendation, its not rules or anything. Just stuff i thought might help Mavericks as i was poking around other forums.
These are colors you may want to avoid as your common font. Colors that are harsh on black background and/or give anxiety:
Red
Orange
Yellow
Lime Green
Blue
Colors too dark to read on black background:
Maroon
Navy blue
Teal
Brown
Green
purple
I know that is majority of the colors are in the default tab. I was to remind fellow Mavericks this isn't a set rule and it's only just some advice for choosing a font color for regular post. I use limegreen, red, orange and I think yellow every now and then and I'm sure most of you have changed your font to draw attention to it.
You are also not restricted by the colors the forum offers, you can choose any color you like by replacing the word with the her code. Here are a few links to help you find a good font color to test out that you can have fun with.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_colors
http://html-color-codes.com/
http://www.w3schools.com/colors/colors_picker.asp
So far everyone has been good with the colors. It's OK to be creative with the colors, I encourage Mavericks to try out different colors if you feel like it. It's also OK to just stick with the plain light grey font too if you are happy with that. It doesn't make you any less creative.
I'm looking into changing the background so bright colors don't appear as harshly. I heard it could also make the forum more inviting.
