HemaPoetry Café
« on: July 31, 2016, 08:31:15 pm »
I do have quite a few poems that I am rather proud of, mostly because I used poetry to confess to a girl I liked once...or like three times. I tend to fumble for words in face-to-face conversation, but luckily, passing a handwritten collection of thirteen love sonnets seems to convey the right feeling. Here are some of the highlights, each under its own spoiler to save some space.

"Tumult and Time"

"Atmosphere"

Just a note about this next one: I like it personally because it comes so much from my heart and you can just see from it a time of me transforming and maturing in my situation. It's also one of my few works that isn't a sonnet.

"Raison D'être"
Spoiler (hover to show)

And, last but not least, what I consider to be my best work yet, which was written after my eventual "break" with the woman who made me muse and muddle over the words that became the poems above; I think it speaks for itself and how I feel even now.

"Love Is Iron"

To me, poetry should make the reader feel something, like a connection. It can take one moment and amplify it, recreate it, and paint it in another's mind. Words have power, and I, as a poet, seek to make use of that power to express myself in ways that others can understand. I appreciate any feedback, since I know I am weak in things such as meter, but then again, not all poetry has to follow any set construction. I hope you all enjoy this. May update eventually, if a muse strikes me again and I find enough words to shove onto paper.

I really enjoyed Atnosphere. It flows the best in my opinion. I can also relate to it.

I can definitely relate to wanting a safe space and stopping the anxiety temporarily.

I think everybody deserves a space like that. Just like everybody deserves a little me-time to treat themselves once in a while.

I'm glad you shared. Keep us updated on your poems, I do like them.

Do you tell stories with poems?

Sometimes, and I had one that did something like that, except that I don't quite like how it flows. I do find that writing from my heart produces some interesting results.

Just a little update, since this got me to thinking about poetry. I had been meaning to write something about my "aesthetic" as the kids are calling it these days.

I went for something a little different this time, again, not going for sonnets. I just kinda freeformed it. I got the idea watching my friend's senior presentation when she got her bachelor degree. Something like a form of poetry about home. I wound up with this.

"Slice of Life"

I feel like it says a lot about me, since this is kind of my ideal. Who knows what kind of emotions are seeping through between the lines of this one?

This is one that I wrote when I was going through some emotional times. I needed to write something that spoke to me and connected me to those things I enjoyed and held dear.

I like that one. It's a very "I am me" kinda thing, and the whimsical all-rhymed nature could probably cheer you up if you're feeling a little down.

I too like mozzarella.

I usually enjoy Edgar Allen Poe. Some of these have a similar rhythmic tone mixed with a more common style.

Personally can't pinpoint a specific one that stands out to me. Atmosphere definitely feels less EAP like.

I might share some poems too but those are far too personal for me. It will take me a while before I start sharing those.

I'm honored to be compared to such a master. I have a book of some of his collected poems and stories. Interesting read, that man...

Anyway, don't feel down about not wanting to share. Some poetry is very much like a journal entry, and as such it can be very close to you. I can't say that I blame you for waiting to share something a little more...let's say "appealing to a wider audience," in that it's more...not quite generic, but. Ah, interpersonal, rather than intropersonal, if you follow.

It's semantics basically. If you prefer more modern and/ormainstream?

I'm not sure what I prefer. I just like for poetry to make me slow down and feel. I also enjoy picking things apart and coming to understand them. In high school, my AP English IV teacher made us do five poetry analysis paragraphs a week, and I spent most of mine on Shakespeare's sonnets, since there were enough to cover the semester. The style kind of rubbed off on me, or so I'd like to think.

Due to a combination of the slow and somewhat grievous song stuck in my head ("Envy" by One-Eyed Doll, in case this post is being read without relation to where I mentioned it earlier today), an interesting development in my group of friends that led me to some disheartening revelations about myself, and the fact that I'm studying Romantic era poetry (today's was Charlotte Smith's sonnets, to boot), I found myself inspired to take up the pen again, for a completely different tone than I usually take. I came up with the title after I wrote it, but here's all that.

"Contemplative Lament"
Spoiler (hover to show)

It may seem to end abruptly, and there's a period you might think would be a question mark (it is not an error, I assure you, nor is the spelling of feint), but while I don't consider this my strongest piece, I still think there's something valuable to it. Once again I find myself being very personal and blunt with my subject matter, and yet oddly subjective with imagery. What do you all think?

It feels like a series of thoughts or I'm in the middle of a story. I think it sounds good but maybe it could be expanded more and feel a little conclusive. But that's just my opinion.
