General MM Discussion / Re: What are your fatal flaws in art/writing?
« on: August 06, 2017, 11:12:28 pm »
Biggest flaw in art outside of typical anatomy problems is that I only draw what's in my field of comfort. I always have these amazing thoughts in my head, but for some reason, all that ever makes it onto paper is the stuff that I'm capable of drawing, and I end up hating the piece because all I see when I look at it are the things that could have happened.

Biggest flaw in writing, outside of the fact that I'm not an experienced writer by any means, is the fact that I'm always afraid of writing a full script for a story of mine. I've had multiple stories, most short and one massive one, that I've never written a full script for. An old story of mine, Gransora, is currently sitting on my hard drive in the shape of dozens of messy Word files that no one other than myself can understand. Even the current short story that I'm working on, "Reverse", is made up of a bunch of Word files. I want to turn it into a script and eventually a full blown manga, but I lack the ability to simply start.

I know dat feel with both, it is so disheartening sometimes, isn't it?

Your initial concepts for Gransora that you used to post always looked interesting, it's a shame you never completed it. I'm sure Reverse will live up to the hype im making in my head for it :P

Thank you all!

The reason it's slow improvement is because i'm not aiming to be a pro artist, it's something i do for fun (I'm doing an MSC in a completely unrelated field come september). The compliments brought a smile to my face, thank you all! :)

Here is a small mango sneak peak, introducing the main antognist (ZAYN) for my manga.

Coffee House / Re: SJWs
« on: July 02, 2017, 02:56:09 pm »
I think it depends on the context you use SJW to describe a person. People who continuously take action to overcome real discrimination, inequality and injustice do excellent work. For example, Amnesty International do some excellent work to help overcome issues in social justice through fighting for Human Rights. Similarly, without activists and good social thinking, many services would be inadequately able to serve people that may need it the most. For example, ramps & elevators for those that need wheelchairs/mobility issues. Overall, whether something is good should entirely be based on their actions. Right now in my country, the Fitness for Work thing is a great example of why social justice activism is needed, as our Mental Health Assessment for fitness for work is terrible and likely causing harm to those with mental illness.

I personally believe there is an issue in debate, especially in America. It seems like people are simply unwilling to listen to opposition, but this can expand to hundreds of topics outside of Feminism, and it's something that's echoed throughout human history. From Flat Earth, to modern 'sensitivity' towards topics such as racism, misogyny, misandry and more. Whilst there are some people with extreme left wing ideologies and opinions of how society should be structured, I believe the best approach is discussion. Unfortunately, people with extremist ideologies are usually disinterested in the type of discussion that's usually needed to fix these issues. Whether it be extreme social justice activation, extremist religious views, etc.

Hi everyone! I've been pretty dead, huh. To be fair, i was also dead on MR too, so yeoh! This place still active, right?

Anyway, i've finally gotten around to creating a manga, so i'll be posting page wips and finals in here. Here's the current Work in progress for page 1!

Note: The Mario 8-bit thing will be getting removed as i didn't remove it, i placed it for my own visualisation (the entire area will have my own graffiti), it's place holder! :)

Hope everyone's doing well.

Is it bad I really wanted to write a TL;DR as a joke? I do understand where you're coming from though mate, so no worries. It's normal to get frustrated with many users on forums, but often you'll be happier being a "shut-in". I've found people usually aren't looking for critique, comments, or to help each other improve and instead only want people to comment "good work you're improving" in their threads.

In my opinion, it's kinda ruined MangaRaiders a little bit, people don't try and help eachother anymore, and all they want to do is circlejerk with eachother. It's created pointless 'workshops' that never get complete and have little purpose.

In terms of people not communicating in a calm, well mannered way, usually messaging a moderator is best. For example, someone on MR once started trying really hard to argue with me, going as far as pm'ing me to try and start things. He got temporarily banned as a result. (The ban wasn't a result of just messaging me, but multiple people). A lot of people just aren't worth the time and effort.

I'm quite partial to sara pichelli's Ultimate Spider-Man. Miles is a cool character, and she's my favourite comic artist.

Tips and Tutorials / Re: Mirror Neurons and writer centipede.

Again, MN's are quite a new subject (around 20 or so years) and they're not fully understood. There's quite a few things we think they do. Generally though, i think it's safe to say that they're not responsible for our behaviour/or passing down behaviour, they're responsible for linking motor action and perceptual representation.

There's a nice minireview that goes over some of the research done in the last 20 or so years that's quite a light and nice read, called 'What we currently know about Mirror Neurons' done by Kilner & Lemon. Or Wikipedia might be useful, but it also seems to touch on other Psych theories like ToM, Autism and the likes. Not sure if Wiki would be too much of an overload, since it sounds like you've not read anything on them.

I'm not really sure what you're meaning by 'wiring', generally when i think of wiring i think of white matter since it's generally used to connect areas of the brain to each other.

Psychologist here, you misunderstand mirror-neurons.
I'm going to abbreviate them as MN's.

MN's are a class of visuomotor neuron that will fire as a result of both activity from individual activity and observation of same/similar acts performed by other individuals. Activity in this sense would be something simple, like grasp food with the hand. (MN's are the bee's knees because they allows us to create a potential link from the observation of others with our own motor system.) Basically though, they are regulated by action specificity, or goal-orientated action. When the research talks about this, it's talking about simple actions (such as to grasp with the hand), not ideas for stories, etc. They are motor-based, and are used to show how we understand movement.

The closest you can get with Mirror Neurons and your idea is associative learning, which isn't really about what you discussed. Sorry :P

You may be interested in instead reading about memory bias, Cryptomesia comes to mind, which is inadvertent plagiarism.

I'd just like to point out that Adblock Plus are not reliable, they allow certain companies to buy their way into a whitelist, and aren't blocked.

I recommend uBlock Origin, much less shady.
