Credits/citations : Important ? Important (Read This !)
« on: September 12, 2016, 12:41:17 pm »
Crediting/citing the original creators work ... deemed not important and/or not worth it to most of the users here on the internet ... yep , that's internet for you . Thanks a lot for adding a lot more work for us creditors who has been doing all of this for you . This thread is made to highlight the importance of doing such a simple act and how to do it (at least) right in a more informal way . let me remind you that this is from my voice on this matter , but regardless how it may end up , the motive behind me speaking up on this matter does indeed echo in that many other had voiced out the same concern about this (Will be stated below) and at times . better . So , it is possible that I may not cover this issue entirely . If there are anything left unanswered , leave a reply in this thread and I or anyone may get to it .

The importance of crediting and citation

1. The obvious - avoiding getting put up on the wall of shame , blacklisted and worse , getting the ticket
Especially if you're using them for your work and don't even bother citing/crediting back to the original source where you took it from , and worse don't even bother asking for permission to use it , always leads to an upgrade to lawsuit and it's easy for it to occur ... really easy . The major issue is that paying for one to happen is too costly , it's worth the time for the initiator to precede into having one . Which is why art getting stolen and going rogue/invisible is still on a rampant level .

Well , not recently . There have been cases of crowdfunding and public shaming going on in order to combat this . Also , there had been moves being made by major sites taking down works by supporting the victims of said works and remove them when asked . Though it's still quite at large , these issue is , it's shrunken steadily thanks to raised awareness and joint rally against such acts . So , serve this as a reminder - if you feel like not doing it , you're going to be caught much easier .

2. Preventing art theft , plagiarism , rogue/invisible art and misunderstanding on usage rights and ownership .
This . Happens . ALL THE TIME ! Whenever a creative work goes uncredited while it gets circulated all around the internet , the more exposed it becomes to all of the above . by citing/crediting them on your end , you effectively give 'identity' to the said works instead of ending up being another one of the millions rogue/invisible works , waiting for the unscrupulous bunch of ingrates to steal and make big bucks out of them . Trust me , it's very easy for this to happen , here's one example I've written before :

Quote
Spoiler (hover to show)
Read the description in the video . I'm sure you'd ask "Well , this person did give credits there !" Yes , it's a credit but aside from the fact it is a theme song of Flandre Scarlet , it's not the right song title . You know what's worse , as the video description says , this person had stated that this is his/her song (along with others) . Guess what , big NO :
Spoiler (hover to show)
This is the original . "But wait , this is a MIDI remix ! It didn't cite it's original music where it came from ! And there's no song title and name either as well !"

Before we get to that , let me just say this . The video is the ORIGINAL midi , made by ProPianoTutorials . So , for the case of the first one above , the user is utterly guilty for this . But that does not make the user who made the second youtube video any less guiltier ... well , a tiny bit less , but guilty nonetheless .

This person (ProPianoTutorials) didn't state the non-MIDI original remix , nor the song title and the theme song for who or worse , the original music and who created the song in the first place .
Spoiler (hover to show)
Different remix , but here's the huge difference . Most of the solid credits are there except for one , but I can excuse this . "That's very unfair of you , targeting me for this while you don't accuse this person for not properly crediting ..." . If I don't know who made this remix or it's original form to begin with and I decide to look for it basing on the credits given by this person who made the video , I'm going to be thankful to this person for providing these credits because all of those credits are real , missing though that the fact that the original composer of the original song is not there (again , it's excusable due to the ample amount of authentic credits) . This person had that courtesy to even link you to the original remix he/she used for the MIDI . Talk about being respectful , selfless and good-willed !
Spoiler (hover to show)
The original remix . Guess what ? This person who uploaded the video did not make the remix and guess what again ? This person like the above , made an effort (hardly even) to give credits to this as well . I know , there's no credits given for the image used (He/she at least should've) , but I'm stressing on music , not artworks (regardless , both are treated the same and credits need to be given to both)  . Now we know who made that remix that gave birth to the MIDI version(s) of it , a simple googling will yield results to where to support this team and buy their product (or if they didn't sell them , CREDIT THEM !) !

Now that we solved the remix part of the song , let's get looking for the original , shall we ? But , I'm sure if you made that attempt of just searching out all of those credits , you'd most probably stumble upon it's original :
Spoiler (hover to show)
"Who made the song ?" . Hint , hint : It's been 'mentioned' there . It doubles as a credit , so read carefully and properly .

Now that brings us to this question : Whom should we credit ? Who is not doing it right ?

For the remix MIDI version (not counting the third one) , the person who made the second video should get credited for and the first one is dead guilty for it and need to get their hair burned off , every single strain of it .

For the remix version , the person who made the third and fourth video did the right thing as it is made by Cool&Create . While the person who made the first and second video are guilty for this and need to kneel onto a thorny file for hours .

For the original version , the person who made the third , fourth and fifth video does it good as this is a theme song for a character named Flandre Scarlett titled 'U.N Owen was her ?' by Zun for the game Touhou . While the person who made the first and second video are guilty for this and need to get staked onto a raging bonfire and be labeled 'Witch' .

Notice that the person who made the first video kept getting caught red-handed ? Well , he/she deserves it , to be honest (I hope it gets even more the more he/she decides to stick to his/her guns)

3. More exposure for us creators .
What most if not all creators of videos , musics , art , etc. appreciate more than money is some form of recognition and exposure to the world . In fact , getting more recognition and exposure nets them more money from more people who wants to buy them . But the major problem is that were usually be awfully busy to do an active self-promotion , other than spewing out more work , thus we're limited ourselves in that matter . That's why they'd hope that their fan would help out on this , even if they did not mention it at all .

4. A better , proper form of appreciation .
Buying them is good , but giving credits is better and most of the creators appreciate this more than just purely money alone . So , put some more effort in doing so ... it's not that difficult .

Crediting properly
I'm sure you wonder , do we have to place credits/citations the way you see most big , fat , dictionary books do ? You know , something we'd normally see right at the bottom of the wikipedia page ? Have no fear , you don't have to go to that length when crediting someone righteously . What you see in Wikipedia is the formal way and it's normally reserved for such occasion and also things like figure speech and sometimes to that extent , articles and journalism .

If anything , there's an informal way of crediting/citing that caters to commoners . Here are the do's and dont's on crediting/citing informally :

- Do cite the author of the said work posted and/or used , especially if the said work has no watermark (a lot don't put them on it for good reason)
- If the work you're intending to post is uncredited , make use of the reverse search engines provided , like Google Reverse Image Search and Tineye for static visual arts .
- Always make a habit of verifying the credits to make sure it actually is the right one . It's very possible that it is not , especially on the internet . Make use of google search on researching .
- Having links that takes us directly to the author's personal website (Preferably) , blog , store and/or gallery (Preferably) are usually recommended and better .
- If you still can't find the actual owner of said work , get help from people on the same field preferably , but anybody would do still .
- Preferably , do not post them up without having placed credits along with them , especially publicly , especially if they're new and/or still not well-known .
- It is recommended that you do not post the actual resolution and quality of the said work to the public if it does not have credits attached to it .
- Anything aside from the authors name and links to their personal sites , blogs , store , gallery or any other sites they're active in does not make a valid credit .
- Links to any third party sites that has credits to the actual owner of said works does not make a valid credit as well , same goes with "Internet" and "Google" .
- Do not link directly to the image link itself (contains endings like .jpg , .png and .gif) . Same goes to others like music , video , writing , etc. .

But if you still want to do this formally , a quick google search (this is for art in general) would help .

Questions often asked or displayed (Especially in a general imageboard/hosting site)
Why do I/we/they do this ?
Simple , we respect the works they've given to us to add and showcase on our imageboard/hosting site . This is our way of showing our thanks - by giving them the exposure and recognition they so need to motivate them to keep doing what they do . It is also a way to tell the viewers that we do not own the works hosted on our site , or any sites for that matter and that it belongs to their respective original creators themselves . That's why we habitually and naturally give credits to them , even outside our original job in an imageboard/hosting site , even if some of us do buy them and scan them to add to the gallery .

And let's not forget that what were doing (uploading these creators work on our site) is as illegal as it get . All the more reason to do it to avoid getting sued !

So you're telling me that just buying their works is not enough to show that we love and respect their works ?
No and yes . No in a sense that you've given them cash to fund for their material and living costs spent in the creation of their works , both present and their future works . But yes , they prefer if you promote/expose their works and/or gallery to others to see on their behalf because of the limitation one person can do and how far can they shine in the public and the fact that they're forever bee-sy .

That way , you encourage them to buy their works as well , generating more needed money to make their lives less a living hell .

Then why they don't they even request us to give them credits then ?
Contradictory to what you believe , we often request it . It's stated either in words , signature/trademarking/watermarking their work , or using licenses on their work , if given . perhaps you didn't read them and/or look for them , so do it more attentively and thoroughly next time . Also , it's down to common courtesy and an act of selflessness and goodwill . I mean , would you keep that secret that you own that work from us away from others ? You can't be that stingy , aren't you ? If they didn't ask for it , it does not mean you don't have to do it .

Then why not make this a rule ?
It's a thing that honestly , shouldn't be a rule that is punishable because it's like we're policing all works circulating on the internet (we like sharing , you know) . But if anything , this is by default a rule of life . So if you somehow don't have it in you , I'd recommend that you apply it ASAP .

Imageboard/hosting sites in general had this as a rule in order to keep the site less illegal that it should be already . It's technically illegal to upload someone else's work onto another site the original creators do not own and/or not a member of to begin with , that's why out of sheer respect for the works being uploaded illegally , we give them credits and links that leads to the owner's site and/or gallery . Which is also why a some of these imageboard/hosting sites tend to not upload the full resolution , high quality image onto their site . If you want the actual image in it's actual size and quality , go to the creator's site and/or gallery . It's technically illegal to host the actual image size and quality outside of their gallery , so don't ask me why they do so .

But I'm seeing others do it , why can't I ?
You don't , period . Do not hop onto that bandwagon , unless you want to be on the witch's side on a current global scale witch hunt and wished to be staked ...

A 'witch hunt' on this ? That's insane !
It's not new . It has been going on for many , many years . It's only more larger , vocal and physical (and it'll keep growing , regardless) because of the nature of circulation of creative works on the internet . It's so fast , easy and grows at plague-speed , ungoverned/unmoderated , it's very difficult to keep track of them , making them almost always ends up getting stolen and/or going rogue and/or invisible . The only effective way to combat this begins with you , the user who had the said works , starting with citing/crediting them .

But I got them off the internet ! How the hell am I going to find it's original owner of the said works then ?
In the wake of the ever growing issues of plagiarism and intellectual property seemingly going rogue came what would be a first act of salvation - a remedy of sorts to this issue .

Google Reverse Image Search and Tineye , to name the two most effective reverse search engine for art exclusively (I know there are others and similar engines for other creative works , but I'm focusing more on arts for this matter) are the first big movement being made to combat this , so use it . If that fails , which rarely does unless it was a case of gone in too deep into the Davy Jones locker , either by the effects of not getting credited for too long and/or the author decides to be invisible or worse , dead , go to prominent sites of said creative art (music , writing , etc.) or any big scale imageboard/hosting sites and seek their help in crediting them . At times , they might have them in their folder or that they know where it came from .

It's varies , but better than nothing .

But what about the others who didn't read this and weren't aware of this ?
The Growing Tree Effect .

It starts with you . So make a habit of doing this and educate those around you . It benefits all parties !

What if they don't care ? Or find it not that important or it's a hassle ?
We 'encourage' these kind of people to walk straight into the lion's den - we want some form of 'entertainment' after all (We live a very stressful life , you know) . Trust me , they'll regret doing this , especially if they're of the field they're working on especially . You on the other hand , you've done your best , so don't ever change your mind and do what they do .

So , you keep bringing up this "crediting" and "citing" in art as though it's a death wish for not doing it ...
It is and will be , especially to me as an artist myself , this is a potential death blow to my career and the damage is permanent . Call me rude , condescending , whatever ! We won't be staked for our wrongdoing towards your actions , it'll be you instead . Also worth remembering , it's not limited to just art , so don't think that we're that forgiving when you're not doing this to other creative works , like music and writing .

Links worth reading
Remember that even if this is in a manga-oriented forum , where writing and art is the thing , it's not just limited to those two only . As you can see , all the links below is about and it's related to the importance of crediting and you'll see that it's not limited to the two mentioned and certainly not limited to the issue related to posting someone else's work on other sites . So , read them and educate yourself !

I remember in Manga Raiders how one member had quality art and then quickly revealed he was stealing and disappeared from the forum without any problems.

This is something serious. @Orchid, I hope that if this ever happens where someone explicitly is stealing credit that it's a top priority to take care of.

I agree with everything said here. We especially don't want this community to help others plagiarize.

If it ever happens I'll take care of it. I like how this post has tools to help find the original artist.

It's good for giving credit where credit is due. Water Marking helps in some occasions but constant watermarking can get annoying.

Additionally recently people have been able to remove basic watermarks.

Also if we happen to find it in the Internet in an ambiguous place, and the source says not to redistribute then there it's a mistake. But still directing to the original source solves the problem.

We want to be respectful as possible. This was something we wanted to pursue even before DeAngelus made a thread about it.

The sooner we don't make a big deal about this, the better IMO. Like Orchid said, it's something that we wanted to consider.

It also helps have good relations with other sites if by chance  some toes are stepped on.
